Feb 26, Colombo: Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday opened the Sooriyawewa integrated community water supply scheme, the largest water supply scheme in Asia ever constructed by the community.
The project constructed at Viharagala, Sooriyawewa at a cost of 90 million rupees by the Urban Development and Sacred Area Development Ministry was ceremoniously vested in the public by the President yesterday evening.
Addressing the gathering, President Rajapaksa pointed out that after ending an era, during when the resources of the country were sold away, the government has now directed the country to achieve development goals.
Despite many challenges faced by the government, the government was able to overcome those obstacles to make the country's future brighter because it relied on the people's trust, the President said. Within a short the government was able to meet many of its development goals, the President noted.
President Rajapaksa stressed that with the support extended by the people to the development programs implemented by the government, the government will be able to accomplish those development goals sooner.
The Sooriyawewa integrated community water supply scheme will serve 3,000 households benefitting 15,700 people.
The project will provide water to the Wanewel-Ara, Mahapelessa, Veheragala Sampath Gama, Badiganthota, Aliolu-Ara, and Baddewewa West Grama Niladhari Divisions with two tanks.
Maha Sanga as well as ministers, Chamal Rajapaksa, Dinesh Gunawardena and Mahinda Amaraweera also participated in this event.
