Feb 26, Colombo: The period to accept the nominations for the upcoming general election in Sri Lanka ended today at noon while objections to the nominations were submitted until 1:30 this afternoon.
The three major political parties United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA), United National Front (UNF), and Democratic National Alliance (DNA) submitted nominations for all 22 districts in the country.
A total of 7,265 candidates submitted nominations to contest for 196 parliamentary seats.
The Elections Secretariat said that 298 Independent Groups placed their deposits for the election.
For 19 seats in Colombo district 836 candidates from 22 recognized political parties and 16 independent groups submitted nominations.
Meanwhile for Tamil-dominated Jaffna district in the North 324 candidates from 15 recognized political parties and 12 independent groups are vying for nine slots in the parliament.
In addition to the elected 196 seats in the parliament 29 parliamentarians will be named from the national list. The slots of candidates will be allocated to the political parties and independent groups according to the number of island-wide votes they receive.
Each political party or independent groups that submitted nominations was also required to submit a list of 29 persons to be selected as national list parliamentarians. Democratic National Alliance, the coalition led by former military chief Sarath Fonseka has only submitted a list of 22 names.
